Yesterday I posted my review of TobyMac's remix album, Dubbed & Freq'd, and on that day he released his latest single "Me Without You," along with two remixes done by two of the remixers from Dubbed & Freq'd: Telemitry and Capital Kings. The song is the first single from his upcoming album, Eye On It, which is scheduled to come out on August 28.
"Me Without You" is very much a good song, but at the same time when I listen to it, I do not feel like I am listening to TobyMac. Yes, it is his voice, but the song is nothing like anything he has every done. He seems to have fallen into the mainstream pop bandwagon, and is definitely not reminiscent of his old rock mixed in with some hip hop style. If I were not a Christian and did not know it was song about Jesus, I could honestly see Justin Bieber singing it, because it is that much of a pop song (and it never really mentions God, not that that is an issue since we can get it from context). With that being said, judging the music for the music, it is solid. As far as pop music goes, it is one of the best releases in Christian music this year, and is up there with Britt Nicole and Owl City. I love the concept of the song, which is that without Christ we would be doing things that are completely not worth anyone's time. As far as staying true to his old style though, he certainly did not. So, if you are looking for a song that reminds you of anything he has ever done before, do not listen to this song. But if you want a really good song and do not care if it lives up to his old style, then look no further.
The Telemitry remix of the song is alright; he tried to stray away from how the song sounds originally, which could have worked very well, but when I listen to it I am not as big of a fan of it as I am the original. There is some good dubstep in it though that sounds pretty good. Out of the two remixes, the Capital Kings remix is definitely my favorite. He tried to stay true to the original song, and gave it a really cool new flare that is honestly almost just as good as the original. If you were to get just one remix of the song, definitely go with the Capital Kings one.
TobyMac knows what he is doing; he has been in the music industry for a long time. He has been a part of so many different aspects of the process, from the recording, to the writing, to the producing, to the record company part. He knows what he is doing, so I am sure he knows what he is doing by going with a completely different style than his usual stuff. Part of me hopes he stays true to the style he had on Tonight and Portable Sounds, but the other part of me wants to see what he can do with a completely new style like he has created with "Me Without You." I really wish I did not have to wait until Eye On It releases to see what he goes with, but it has definitely created some suspense within me to see what he does!
