I have been looking forward to writing this review for sometime now, but just have not had the chance to do it until now. I was introduced to Jesus Culture over the summer by a friend of mine, when he sang the song "Your Love Never Fails," from their album by the same title. He did a great job with the song, and I had to go check it out for myself on iTunes. I immediately bought it and I have been long awaiting another album from the band. Awakening: Live From Chicago is definitely my favorite worship album of the year; Jesus Culture knows how to make incredible music that is both fun to listen to and worshipful at the same time.
Awakening has the best opening to an album that I have heard in a very long time; I feel so refreshed even after just listening to the first 40 seconds of the album. "Awaken Me" is an absolutely amazing song, and I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I have listing to this song, or at least the first three or four minutes of it. That is one thing I love about this album: it is around 104 minutes long. The first song itself is almost nine minutes long. Chris Quilala is my favorite member of Jesus Culture, and he definitely did a great opening up the album.
Another favorite of mine off the album is "Break Every Chain," which is sung by Kristene Di Marco. As soon as she sings the first line of the song the crowd starts cheering, and I cannot tell if it is because she is the one singing or if it is because they agree wholeheartedly with what she is singing about. This song is so powerful, and the lyrics are something I believe everyone should hear everyday. The songs starts off very simply, but boy is it powerful. She keeps repeating the lines, "There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. To break every chain. To break every chain. To break every chain." So simple, but so powerful.
At about the half way point in the album Chris Quilala comes back out and sings "Nothing But the Blood," which turned into a really tender moment on the album. The crowd got involved in singing the song, and it was a great way to do an interlude. It seems like every song this band does is very powerful, but just hearing the words of this song sends chills down my back. Jesus Culture did a great job remaking this classic hymn, and even though it is old, it has not lost its power.
"Dance" is so much different than every other song on the album, and is so much fun to listen to. Kim Walker-Smith did a great job with the track. Every time I listen to it I think of a bunch of old people getting really upset about anybody dancing and saying that it is of the devil. The whole point of the song is to dance for joy like David did in the Bible, but every time I listen to this song I always imagine somebody giving me a lecture about dancing. I love this song, and I think we all definitely have a reason to dance since we have been saved by the grace of God.
You know I have go to end the review by talking about a Chris Quilala song. "Holding Nothing Back" is such a great song with some of the best lyrics on the album. Every time I hear Chris' voice I am in awe at how much talent he has. Now that I look at "Your Love Never Fails," he is the one that sings that song too. I would love to hear a solo album from him someday. This song is a great one to listen to if you want to praise God and you want to release a bunch of energy at the same time. I love the first verse of the song when he says, "I am chosen, I am free, I am living for eternity. Free now forever. You pick me up, turn me around. You set my feet on solid ground. Your now forever."
Jesus Culture's sixth full-length album is their best so far. Awakening is an amazing worship experience that definitely deserves to be listened to by everyone. If you want to truly worship, then listen to this album. From the first song to the last you will enjoy listening to the music and feel as if you are growing closer to God at the same time. Anybody who enjoys worship music or adult contemporary style music will love this album. Definitely consider buying a copy of this one!
