Je'kob, after introducing the Christian hip hop world to Swagger Rock and Minor Setbacks for Major Comeups, has been working on this project. Pocketless Souls introduces a newer side of Je'kob that I have not heard in his previous projects. It sounds more Hip Hop-heavy than anything else. When you listen, do not expect anything with a booming bass or a heavy rap style. Make sure you expect pianos and real drums instead of this, or else you will not find what you are looking for. Not that that is a bad thing; the style he chooses for this album is unique and rare in the industry.
Je'kob's intro leading into "Falling Stars" is a decent way to start the album. I like the way it flows, even though the song is not my favorite. I think that if there was a different song to start this album, it would have been a better start. I honestly do not think that the style Je'kob is trying to express in Pocketless Souls is properly shown through "Falling Stars." Even though I do not think this song is good, I think "Far Away" is a proper way to make up for it. I like how Je'kob has Applejaxx and Beleaf on the song; they fit well into the beat, even though their other projects are not anything like Je'kob's.
"Up Up & Away" is another of my favorite songs on this project. I am happy with the lyrics he chose for this song, and Conscience does a good job as well. He also does a good job on the other songs on this album, but I think he does best on this particular song. My least favorite song with Conscience on it is "Come A Long Way." Je'kob is okay in this song as well; I do not find anything impressive about this song and I think that it could be improved and made better, as well as a few other songs on this album.
"Pushin' Me" with Coldplay really surprised me. First of all, I am surprised that Coldplay is on a song with Je'kob. Second, I'm surprised at the fact that it is really good. In fact, it is one of the best on the whole project. Coldplay did a great job on this song, and Je'kob expresses his lyrical and God-given talents through it as well. All of the ending tracks are some of my favorites on the entire album. "Seventy Five Deep" and "Can't Stop Me" are good songs. I prefer the former over the latter because "Can't Stop Me" has Je'kob's voice being auto tuned. Je'kob's voice should not be auto tuned; I prefer to hear him rap and someone else sing, because he has a talent for rapping. Regardless, his verses are great, and it makes up for it.
Je'kob has made a great project that I will be listening to for a while. Pocketless Souls is out of the ordinary, and it is worth the download. Je'kob has some good songs which express a solid style. You might forget about it over time, but when you come upon it again, you will be surprised that you did.
Favorite Song: Pushin' Me
Favorite Lyrics: "The body of Christ is so incredibly diverse, I'm out in left so they look at me like I'm a curse." (From the song "Seventy Five Deep")
