Gungor is a stranger style of band to me, but they're sound is so unique that I struggled with whether or not I liked them when I first heard Beautiful Things. It sounds so different , but its their style of worship, and they execute it very well in their new album, Ghosts Upon The Earth.
One of the key elements in this album that makes it stand out and separated from all other worship bands is their use of instruments. As I listen, I not only heard pianos and acoustic guitars, but I hear flutes and banjos, which really makes me want to lend my ear to their music. The entire album flows well, and all of the songs and elements within the songs are harmonious. The singing is also capturing and sincere to the ear of the Lord. As I listen to the album through, my heart and soul praise Jesus throughout every song.
The way that Gungor praises God in every track makes me sing my heart out, regardless if my family is home to hear the music turned up all the way. I hope my neighbors hear this music, though, because its good stuff. Its purely worship, and its one of the only complete worship albums that I love to listen to all the time. It's hard to not like Gungor if you're into their kind of genre. Their words inspire me to plunge into deep and intimate worship with God, just so I can get away and praise and worship Him.
The lyrics in Ghosts Upon The Earth sometimes sound just like my prayers, which really helps me to connect to what Gungor is singing about. Their relentless praises through their singing and words put me into a deep state of connection with God. They seem to resonate in my heart when I shut my computer down and turn off the lights to rest, and when I go off to school and when I'm exposed to sin and darkness. Gungor's words really stick with me as a Christ follower and really help me to worship God.
My favorite song is something I had difficulty choosing. I deeply enjoy and connect with each individual track, and each one sounds new and unique to me. In the end, though, I have to go with "Brother Moon." It is my favorite because it stands out vocally. Michael Gungor sings differently in this song, as if he is an instrument being played with all of the others, blending with the instruments unique to the song. The tune is also very creative, and the words in the song are unique, and give glory to God in an abnormal yet exceptional way.
I do not deduce anything off of my rating for this album for many reasons. First of all, I feel as if the lyrics are very creative, the sound is uniquely Gungor, and the mood is strangely soothing and calming. Second, Gungor could not have done any better. Everything about this album screams that it is divinely inspired, and it deserves nothing less than 5 out of 5. I was tempted to give them more than that, but I'll wait for Gungor's next album to give them that waiting which, by the way, I am very excited for already.
