Deas Vail is another band with a really unique sound. They have built their career off of being the band that sounds completely different than anything else out there. I have listened to a few of their songs before, but this album really made me a huge fan. The songs are so catchy and the vocalists Wesley and Laura Blaylock have very soothing voices that fit perfectly with their style of music. If I were to try and fit Deas Vail's style into a box it would have to be a mix between Relient K and Owl City. They have the uniqueness of Owl City and the sound of Relient K. This self-titled release by Deas Vail turned out better than I ever thought it would be and I was pleasantly surprised when I began to sing along with the songs.
The album starts off with one of my favorite melodies on the album, "Desire." It sets the mood for the album very well and Laura automatically establishes the fact that she has an amazing voice. Then when Wesley comes on and starts singing you can tell automatically that he and Laura sound really good together. Their voices seem to be made to harmonize with each other. This song turned into a really cute love song that has so many amazing facets to it.
"Sixteen" sounds a whole lot like Relient K (who happens to be their label-mate on Mono vs. Stereo). The chorus turned really good and has one of the catchiest tunes on the CD. Once again Wesley showed off his amazing voice and really showed the depth and versatility of it. Both Wesley and Laura can hit a tremendous amounts of notes and their voices astonish me every time I listen to this album. Another upside to this song is the lyrics. I love the line that says, "Love is in the hands that reach out. Baby don't waste this chance because it might not come back around."
I get so excited every time I get to "Quiet Like Sirens" on the album. This song turned out being a mix between Swimming With Dolphins (minus the techno) and Relient K. I love the chorus so, so much and I could listen to Wesley's serene voice all day long. The instrumentals turned out really clean on this track and the production throughout the song was really good as well. The chorus is so catchy and I get it stuck in my head very quickly. It will only take one time of listening to "Quiet Like Sirens" before it is stuck in your head for the rest of the day as well. Do it, I dare you!
The fourth song "Summer Forgets Me" really reminds me of days in the past, especially summer time. It do not know what it is about this song that brings back memories of hanging out with friends and family, but it does. This song has some weird power to make you recall all the good times in your life, so beware! The chorus once again is spectacular, but I wish they would have included Laura's gorgeous voice on this track because it would have just been that much better.
As the album starts getting closer to the end it is almost just as good as the beginning but the only track that really sticks out to me of those is the song "Wake Up and Sleep." Once again, it is really catchy and Wesley's voice is just as smooth. The group aspect of the song at the end where they have a bunch of people (it sounds like kids) singing parts of it was a nice touch.
I highly recommend this album if you like music that sounds different than normal music that can easily fit into one genre box. Deas Vail fits into so many different categories but their music comes out sounding so natural. I love musicians who make amazing music and at the same time do it with such ease that it seems as if they do not even have to try. This is another one of those albums that just entrances me and lets me relax. I would have to say that two of my favorite albums right now is this one and Gungor's album Ghosts Upon the Earth (check out our review here). Make sure you pick up a copy of Deas Vail.
